Description
The Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) and family medicine educator fellowship (pre-doctoral and post-doctoral eligible) is aimed at Family Therapy and integrated health Trainees. The 54 week experience that starts in July, provides onsite PCBH focused clinical and educational supervision from an inter-disciplinary team, and has an innovative curriculum. The curriculum ranges from building expertise in integrated behavioral health, specifically the PCBH model to preparation for an academic appointment or clinical career. The primary focus of the fellowship will be clinical work, providing behavioral health services to a variety of patients, and will also include research and educational components.
The Department of Family Medicine at University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine has 5 years of experience in implementing the PCBH model and is currently scaling to other clinics. The fellow/intern will receive training from a variety of clinical settings, as their experiences will span between family medicine, and obstetrics and gynecology. In addition to the clinical training experiences, fellows will be involved mentoring resident physicians in PCBH focused clinical rotations. Educating the future medical workforce to be competent in Integrated Behavioral Health is a priority for the Department and the University, and thus will be a component of the fellowship. The PCBH curriculum for medical residents is based on clinical teaching models similar to medical education. The trainee will receive hands-on experience and guidance in developing specific skills in clinical teaching of behavioral medicine in primary care as well as contribute to advancing the curriculum in the coming year.
Due to the unique nature of our geographic location and population, fellows/interns will engage in training to either start to develop, or to strengthen Spanish speaking skills. The Spanish speaking coursework/training plan will be developed on a case-by-case basis at the beginning of the training year.
Lead faculty:
The fellowship Program Director is Dr. Michelle Varón, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with training in the PCBH model. She has designed and implemented an advanced PCBH rotation for family medicine residents at two residency sites. Dr. Deepu George, is a licensed marriage and family therapist and serves as the Director of Integrated Behavioral Health and is currently focused on advancing PCBH model across multiple UT Health Rio Grande Valley clinics. The fellow will receive clinical supervision from both Dr. Varón and Dr. George. We have several residents and faculty trained in the PCBH model through national experts and model PCBH sites, which the fellow will interact with during the training year.
Interested applicants please send letter of interest, Curriculum Vitae, three letters of recommendation, and unofficial transcript to Michelle Varón, PhD.
